Situation overview

At at 22:58 local time (12:58 UTC) on 14 May, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kms, approximately 45km off the northeast coast of Kokopo near the island of New Ireland. There were at least two subsequent aftershocks registering 5.0 in magnitude nearby. A tsunami warning was issued for PNG and Solomon Islands by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, but subsequently lifted by 00:30 on 15 May. Initial reports from the East New Britain Provincial Disaster Centre and humanitarian partners in the area indicated that while strong shaking was felt reports of damage has been minimal and most damage reported or observed has been confined to houses made from light materials, particularly in coastal areas. The provincial disaster authorities reported two 1-meter waves resulting from the earthquake and that power was cut in Kokopo. For East New Britain and New Ireland, the provincial disaster authorities are conducting assessments today. Initial reports from Bougainville showed that there was no significant damage. The National Disaster Centre and the DMT Secretariat are monitoring the situation.
