Situation Overview:
Dominica
With 15 confirmed deaths and virtually the entire population of 73,000 people affected by Maria, the needs in Dominica are critical. 56,000 people in Dominica require urgent support with shelter and water; nearly 20,000 children under 18 years have been affected. All 53 health facilities have been affected to some degree. The country’s entire agricultural production has been wiped out, creating concerns with food security and livelihoods. Power and water supplies have been disrupted throughout the country. Although access to Dominica is gradually being restored, internal access along key roads is limited and hindering the delivery of crucial aid to cut-off communities. Immediate needs include food, water, water purification kits, construction material, electric generators, fuel, hygiene kits and home supplies. Dominican Republic
1.5 million people are without clean water supply; 11,000 people have been displaced (with some 2,000 people still in shelters). Puerto Rico
the death toll stands at 10 and is expected to rise over the coming days. There is no electricity for the island’s 3.5 million residents. Preliminary estimates indicate 80% of the island’s crops destroyed. Authorities are now assessing the full extent of the damage and are warning it could take years for Puerto Rico to recover fully.
