Indonesia 6.4M earthquake

1. The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported an earthquake of 6.4 magnitude RS which struck on the north coast of Lombok Island, and which was felt in Lombok as well as in Bali and Sumbawa on Sunday (29/7/2018) at 05.47 hours local time. The land-based earthquake’s epicentre was approximately 47 km northeast of Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara. The earthquake was triggered by the activity of the Naik Flores Cesar fault. The earthquake had no tsunami potential and thus no tsunami warning was issued. Between the initial quake and now there have been 66 smaller intensity aftershocks, with the strongest of these having magnitude 5.7 RS.
2. As noted above the earthquake was felt in North Lombok, West Lombok, Mataram, Central Lombok, West Sumbawa, Sumbawa Besar, Denpasar, Kuta, Nusa Dua, Karangasem, Singaraja, Gianyar and several other areas in Bali. People in West Lombok and Mataram City felt the quake for around 10 seconds.
3. A number of buildings have collapsed in Sambelia and Sembalun sub-districts, East Lombok District and Bayan sub-district in North Lombok District. Provisional data from BPBD West Nusa Tenggara Province recorded that in East Lombok 8 people have died, with a further 10 seriously injured, 10 injured lightly and dozens of damaged houses. In North Lombok regency 2 people have died, and 13 were injured, who are being treated at Senaru Public Health Centre, and a further 7 people in Bayan Public Health Centre.
4. The Indonesian’s Disaster Management Agency’s national Command Post is coordinating with the provincial disaster management offices (BPBD) in West Nusa Tenggara, Bali, and other affected areas. BNPB’s rapid response team has been despatched to provide support to the local disaster management office. BPBD together with other stakeholders (the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), the police (Polri), the national search and rescues agency (Basarnas), local Government works units (SKPD), the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), Ministry of Social Affairs volunteers (Tagana), volunteers and others) are providing assistance. The main initial focus is evacuation and search and rescue.
5. Mt. Rinjani is closed for climbing due to landslide and ash-slide risk on the slopes of the mountain.
