Greece - Wildfires update (source: ECHO Daily flash of 09 Aug2021)
  • Wildfires continue to affect most parts of Evia Island (central-eastern Greece), while the situation in Attica is improving according to the Greek Civil Protection authorities.
  • According to media reports, at least 2,000 people have been evacuated and hundreds of houses have been destroyed.
  • Firefighting assets deployed through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism are operating on Evia, including 112 firefighters and 23 vehicles from Romania. 3 firefighting planes from France, Croatia and Spain were redeployed to Evia from other areas to reinforce the local response.
  • Other international actors involved in the response include firefighters from Ukraine and 34 firefighters and 14 vehicles from Serbia are expected to deploy.
  • The European Commission's Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated on 4 August (EMSR527), and two satellite maps have been provided to support the analysis of the affected areas in Evia.
  • According to the EU European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the fire risk will remain high to extreme in most parts of the island.
