 Situation overview
Attached is the situation report from the Government on the two main aftershocks that occurred on 18 May  (6.7M, 32km depth, 2h57 local time, and 6.8M, 31km depth, 11h46 local time) with epicenters in the cantons of Quinindé, Muisne and Pedernales. 
Main impact:
  • 1 person died, 61 person received medical attention, 32 buildings affected, Jama is without phone network, partial to total lack of electricitity in Pedernales, Jama, Chone, Sucre, San Vicente (Canoa),  San Lorenzo and Quevedo - and electricty coverage at respective percentage in Esmeraldas (75%), Atacames (80%), Muisne (65%), Eloy Alfaro (80%), Quinindé (90%)
  • buildings that were already scheduled for demolition collapsed in Pedernales, Canoa and Portoviejo
  • the Gerontology center in Pedernales, where the EOC worked was damaged
  •  Preventive evacuations of the ECU911 buildings in several cantons but all operating normally now
  • Landslides in Mompiche and Pedernales (see details in the report)
  • schools were closed according to the Ministry of Education

Provincial EOC is chaired by the Vice-president
Cantonal EOCs all activated in affected areas

 Status of request of assistance
The Government of Ecuador requested assistance from the UN and in consultation with the UN Resident Coordinator, an UNDAC team was specifically requested to support in assessment and coordination of the response.
The Government of Ecuador has accepted bilateral assistance, requesting however all assistance providers to obtain prior specific authorisation from the Government of Ecuador, through the National Risk Management Secretariat or relevant ministry (MoH for Medical Teams)


USAR: The Government of Ecuador requests all international USAR teams not yet deployed to stand down. There is no more need for international USAR teams.

Emergency Medical Teams (EMT): The Government of Ecuador informs that it has accepted 2 international level 2 type EMTs: Peru and Samaritan's Purse. For the time being there is no more need for international EMTs. See official communication attached.

EMTs are informed that for the time being the needs are being covered with the capacities currently deployed in country. Should there be further needs, the Ministry of Health will inform the EMT community and asks all EMTs to be ready to register with the CICOM (EMT Information and Health Coordination Unit), through the agreed procedure using the attached form. Teams that have not received approval through official Government channel are requested NOT to start deployment. It is imperative that teams comply with the minimum principles and standards of the EMT initiative.
