• Most of the damage in Port Vila, Efate. Main downtown of Port Vila, Efate.

• 12 confirmed deaths by Vila Central Hospital (VCH) and 8 survivors reported by JPOC. Over 210 injured treated at the main hospital (VCH) and number expected to increase.

• Damage to Tagabe bridge, Teouma bridge and Blacksand bridge. Tagabe bridge has a high risk of collapse if heavy flow of water is experienced due to rainfall.

• Damage to power lines and public water supply in the urban area.

• Mobile phone communication functional with intermittent disruptions.

• Port of Entry – Port Vila main wharf (Lapetasi) is closed due to major landslide.

• Nearby villages near Efate and off-shore islands experienced landslides.

• Key immediate needs include healthcare support, emergency shelter, access to food and water, protection and the restoration of communication networks and electricity.

  • A
    collapsed building at 17°44'11.2"S, 168°18'46.5"E has caused
    debris to block Kumul Highway and Rue Pasteur in Port Vila, as observed on
    20 December 2024 at 10:15 AM local time.

  • Buildings
    affected by a possible coseismic landslide were observed at
    17°43'59"S, 168°19'3"E in Port Vila, as of 20 December 2024 at
    10:15 AM local time.

  • A
    road was blocked due to a landslide at 17°45'23.0"S,
    168°18'24.0"E near Ifira Shipping, as observed on 20 December 2024 at
    10:15 AM local time.

  • No
    major damage to buildings at Port Vila Central Hospital was observed as of
    20 December 2024 at 10:15 AM local time.

Three officers from USAR FRA-03 on a mission in New Caledonia were deployed from 18 to 20 December to carry out a building survey on the infrastructure affected by the disaster and assess needs.

Assessment overview: 10 buildings damaged in Port-Vila, TAGABE and TEHOUMA bridges at risk of collapse and damage to power lines and water supply systems, but the networks are gradually being restored.

Assessment by USAR FRA-03 : ‘Billabong’ building (downtown Port-Vila), 3 levels, flat collapse, joint building assessment work with USAR AUS-1.
