Session title: Choosing Cash Assistance in Support of Shelter and Settlements
18 Apr 23 15:00-16:00

SessionAbstract

In this session we will share early findings from the Global Shelter Cluster's study on deciding when to use cash assistance. The study is led by Habitat for Humanity International, CRS and supported by the Cash and Markets Community of Practice.

The aim of this research is to generate evidence which will support humanitarian practitioners faced with making decisions between modalities to assist those who have lost their shelter and settlements. The goal is that more appropriate support will be provided, resulting in more successful outcomes for those affected by crises. The evidence produced is intended to underpin guidance and tools that may be subsequently developed by technical advisers.

The central research question is:

“What are the criteria for deciding when and where cash assistance is appropriate in support of those who have lost their shelter and settlements in humanitarian crises?”

The study is small and focussed, and intended to inform further research into the use of cash assistance. The research team is collecting data via interviews with a wide range of humanitarian practitioners in different types of crises and geographical areas, who have been involved in ‘Go/No Go’ decisions which consider the use of cash assistance.

The session will begin with a presentation of the early findings, which will be followed by a chaired discussion and an interactive exercise.
