SessionAbstract

Conflict-induced hunger is a pervasive global crisis, with violence and conflict driving acute food insecurity across numerous regions. According to the Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC), conflict, coupled with climate shocks and economic challenges, disrupts food systems, livelihoods, and access to essential resources. By leveraging anticipatory action, humanitarian organizations can mitigate these disruptions, protect vulnerable populations, and build resilience against future crises.

This session will examine how anticipatory action can prevent and reduce the impacts of conflict-induced hunger, spotlighting evidence-based methodologies, such as Action Against Hunger's approach to correlating violence and hunger, and discuss innovative programming that enhances resilience. Through additional contributions from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Red Cross Movement the session will address conflict-induced hunger as a critical global challenge.

Through a dynamic combination of keynote presentations, case studies, and interactive discussions, the session will:

  1. Explore the link between conflict and hunger: Discuss how violence disrupts food systems and drives food insecurity and livelihood loss;
  1. Present anticipatory action methodologies: Share innovative approaches that combine quantitative and qualitative analysis to predict and mitigate hunger in conflict settings;
  2. Catalyze action and advocacy: Equip participants with evidence-based tools to advocate for food security interventions that mitigate the impact of conflict and violence; and
  3. Foster collaboration: Promote dialogue and partnerships among organizations, focusing on best and emerging practices in implementing anticipatory action in conflict settings.

The expected outcomes of the session are:

  1. Enhanced understanding of how anticipatory action can address the dual challenges of conflict and hunger;
  2. Identification of practical tools and approaches to integrate anticipatory action into humanitarian and development programming; and
  3. Strengthened partnerships among organizations tackling conflict-induced hunger.
