This session will explore key case studies and findings from UN-Habitat’s newly released report, Policy Directions: Housing, Land, and Property Solutions to Resolve and Prevent Displacement , that underscores the critical role of HLP rights in resolving and preventing displacement.
A well-functioning housing sector and effective urban land management systems are essential to meeting the HLP needs of displaced populations, their host communities, and other groups competing for limited land and housing resources. By fostering economic and spatial integration, these systems help build social cohesion and support long-term solutions to displacement.
The session will feature case studies from:
UNHCR - on urban rental accommodation and cash support programs for refugees and asylum seekers in Greece, IFRC on private hosting initiatives in Europe in response to the Ukraine crisis, UN-Habitat on efforts to record and safeguard Syrian refugees’ HLP rights and supporting evidence. These real-world examples will offer insights into practical solutions that enhance tenure security and access to housing for displaced populations in urban and rural settings.
Building on these case studies, the session will present key findings from the report, outlining scalable and practical HLP solutions to address the complex challenges of displacement caused by conflict, natural disasters, and other crises. The discussion will be structured around three thematic solution categories: humanitarian protection, recovery and resilience. Key enabling factors required to address and prevent displacement.
