Join us for an engaging and interactive session that transforms the complexities of disaster risk reduction (DRR) and environmental integration in humanitarian programming into an exciting game format! Join the Global Shelter Cluster and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction to dive into a scenario that mirrors the challenges faced in conflict zones, where repeated flooding and landslides disrupt vital humanitarian efforts. Participants will be divided into small groups, rotating through a World Café setup that encourages creative problem-solving and collaboration. Each station will present a unique challenge, prompting you to brainstorm practical solutions while considering diverse perspectives—from local authorities to international humanitarian entities. Whether you are participating in person or online, you will be able to contribute valuable insights that could shape tools and strategies for mainstreaming DRR and environmental considerations into humanitarian response. Together, let’s explore how to enhance our programming, secure funding, and integrate nature-based solutions effectively. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and make a real impact in your everyday work! Outcomes Increase understanding of why and how to integrate DRR and the environment in humanitarian action to enhance preparedness and response efforts. Identification of challenges, practical insights and opportunities for mainstreaming DRR in humanitarian action. Understanding the nuanced needs and challenges in conflict and non-conflict contexts.
Background This discussion is part of a broader Global Shelter Cluster initiative to integrate DRR into humanitarian shelter responses. In addition to the country-level pilots presented at this event, the initiative has developed global guidelines providing strategic direction for shelter operations. Insights from the pilot projects are building the evidence base to scale up DRR and environmental mainstreaming in humanitarian shelter efforts globally. Additionally, these lessons will inform the Global Shelter Cluster's work in addressing flooding and other natural hazards in conflict-affected areas, a critical trend requiring urgent attention to manage current and future risks amid a changing climate and global landscape. The Global Shelter Green Team is collaborating with UNDRR to support the integration of DRR and the environment into national shelter cluster strategies. This collaboration already resulted in the development of an overview ofentry points for disaster risk reduction mainstreaming in humanitarian shelter and settlement interventionswhich complements technical support provided to operational shelter clusters in fragile and conflict contexts, including in Yemen and Madagascar. |
