In a world increasingly shaped by overlapping crises, anticipatory action offers a lifeline for communities caught in the nexus of climate, disaster, and conflict. However, this requi res innovative approaches to prepare for and reimagin e futures in extreme and complex conditions , especially in fragile and conflict-affected settings (FCV). In the face of complexity, often the easiest decision is to ignore it. In regions facing recurrent crises, anticipatory action is essential—yet challenges intensify when risks like conflict, economic shocks, and natural hazards converge.
We will address the urgency of scaling good practices by showcasing the latest evidence-based knowledge, lessons learned from the latest practical tools and resources , and first-hand voices from affected co mmunities . By spotlighting the inclusion of conflict-affected communities in DRR and A nticipatory A ction (AA) efforts, participants will engage in discussions on practical resources and guidance that build resilience in the face of overlapping risks and vulnerabilities. A key highlight is the introduction of the forthcoming “AA in FCV settings” Toolk it (RCCC, IWMI, Anticipation Hub, forthcoming) - which brings together experiences from practitioners across the AA community working in FCV settings.
Building on the theme "unprecedented but not unforeseen," the session features interactive methods—applied improvisation, storytelling, and an AA in FCV game—designed to inspire innovative thinking and collaboration. Perspectives from diverse stakeholders, including local actors and conflict-affected governments, will enrich discussions on advancing anticipatory action strategies and co-creating a research agenda for the next five years . The event aims to equip participants with practical tools, innovative strategies, and collaborative approaches to enhance resilience in FCV contexts. Expected outcomes include a deeper understanding of evidence-based decision-making in these settings, practical knowledge of anticipatory action toolkits, and strengthened capacity for applying innovative methods. Through storytelling, interactive experiences, and engaging activities, participants will gain fresh perspectives and actionable insights while fostering creativity and collaboration in a dynamic and enjoyable environment.
