Session Purpose Building on insights from HNPW 2024, this interactive event invites participants to contribute to bridging the gap between policy and practice in humanitarian coordination, through identifying where the upcoming ‘Framework for Humanitarian WASH and Climate Action’ interacts with other humanitarian sectors and climate initiatives. Led by the Global WASH Cluster (GWC) and the GWC Climate Change Working Group, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the German Toilet Organization (GTO), this session will focus on inputs into the framework for Humanitarian WASH and Climate Action. The framework aims to support National Coordination Platforms (NCPs) in defining their roles and responsibilities in responding to the climate crisis and protecting vulnerable populations, operationalised through WASH Climate Action Plans (CAPs), the framework will offer actionable guidance at the country level. Critically, this session extends an open invitation to participants from sectors beyond WASH. We aim to map where diverse sectors and initiatives intersect with this framework, exploring cross-sectoral synergies and opportunities to strengthen climate resilience in humanitarian settings collectively. Session Outline This interactive session will include: - Panel Discussion: A brief discussion with humanitarian coordination actors to highlight the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of adopting this framework. Panelists will also explore potential intersections between WASH and other sectors, encouraging diverse perspectives.
- Consultative Group Work: An interactive segment designed to gather input from attendees, enabling them to contribute to the framework’s design, identify synergies with their initiatives, and explore cross-sectoral alignment.
The feedback and perspectives shared during the session will directly inform the GWC Climate Change Working Group’s future actions and strategies, supporting its mission to strengthen climate resilience within and beyond the humanitarian WASH sector. Expected outcomes This event is intended to create awareness of this framework outside the humanitarian WASH sector, and to bring into the process expertise from across the humanitarian sector, particularly climate experts. Alignment of this framework with existing and planned other initiatives is critical to its appropriateness as a tool for WASH NCPs, and reinforces the GWC Climate Change Working Group’s collective mission to enhance coordination and response toward a more resilient humanitarian WASH sector amid climate challenges. This event paves the way for the official launch of the Global WASH Cluster Humanitarian WASH and Climate Action Framework later in 2025.
