Session title: Nothing about us without us: Including Adolescent Girls
Organizer(s): International Rescue Committee
17 Mar 25 14:30-16:00
UTC+1
How can humanitarian actors ensure inclusion of and accountability for children and adolescents in crisis settings? Too often, gender, age, disability, and displacement status create invisible barriers to accessing essential services. But what if we listened directly to the affected populations and designed responses with them, not just for them? This session, part of the Inclusion and AAP Areas of Common Concern at HNPW, presents findings from two key projects:
Ethiopia & Burkina Faso: IRC and Inclusion International partnered to organize and conduct consultations with adolescent girls with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers. These discussions aimed to identify the barriers, risks, and challenges they face while gathering their insights on designing and implementing inclusive programs. The consultations were structured using Universal Design frameworks and guided by the Listen Include Respect principles. Poland : UNICEF, Plan International, and Save the Children led a consultation with children and adolescents displaced by the Ukraine crisis to explore their subjective well-being, experiences in host communities, and aspirations for the future. The session will explore how partnering with representative organizations, using inclusive methodologies, and applying AAP principles can lead to more effective, community-driven humanitarian responses. Participants will gain access to project resources, including research reports and tools.
Humanitarian actors: Insights on engaging marginalized populations and integrating inclusion and accountability into programming. Representative organizations: Challenges and successes in partnering with international agencies. Facilitators:
