Access to energy is a fundamental need for
displaced populations, yet millions of people in displacement settings lack
reliable and sustainable energy sources. The climate crisis exacerbates these
vulnerabilities, as traditional energy practices within humanitarian sector
often harm the environment and fail to meet long-term needs. Thesecond
commitment of the Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian
Organizations calls on humanitarian actors to “Maximize the environmental
sustainability of our work and rapidly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions”. Humanitarian
assistance needs to evolve to integrate sustainable energy solutions that not
only reduce the climate footprint but also empower displaced communities
through improved living conditions, enhanced safety, and opportunities for
livelihoods. 

The GPA Coordination Unit and the Joint
Initiative are convening donor community to discuss ways to accelerate progress
towards achieving energy access for displaced populations, aligning with global
commitments such asHumanitarian
Aid Donors’ Declaration on Climate and Environment, and theClimate and Environment Charter for
Humanitarian Organizations. 

The roundtable will serve as a platform to: 

• Share progress, challenges, and innovative practices in
  improving humanitarian sector’s capacity to deliver clear energy solutions
  for the displaced populations. 

• Share practical solutions for sustainable energy integration
  and decarbonizing humanitarian infrastructure into wider humanitarian
  funding and programming, based on what’s working and lessons learned from
  the sector. 

• Explore opportunities for joint pledges and co-funding
  initiatives ahead of the High-Level Official Meeting of the Global Refugee
  Forum (GRF) in December 2025.
