Participation and Community Engagement in displacement

Community engagement and participation is central to uphold the basic rights of displaced population in humanitarian responses, and it is an essential part of good site management. It is a key step towards making sure that different needs, capacities and expectations of all groups in a displaced community are represented and addressed, thus contributing to improving humanitarian response and accountability towards affected populations.

But how do we ensure no specific group within the displaced population is left behind? What can we learn from practitioners who have successfully addressed these challenges? What can young people and women affected by displacement teach us about how to better engage them?

The interactive session will use scenarios from displacement sites to reflect on best practices and things to avoid when engaging with specific population groups, such as women and youth. A panel comprised of practitioners engaged in the Women’s Participation Project (IOM) and young persons affected by displacement engaged in NRC’s Youth participation initiatives will share their experiences and will foster discussion with the participants in the session. The session, which will be moderated by the CCCM Global Cluster and the Community Engagement forum, will also showcase existing tools that can facilitate engagement with specific population groups.
