Session title: Early Warning for humanitarians – From impact estimation to mobilization

SessionAbstract

This session will be co-organized by the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), IFRC, and WMO.

When a disaster strikes, international humanitarian actors require rapid information to plan their support to the affected population.

The session will examine the following

  • Criteria for the decisions to mobilize or intervene in humanitarian organisations, and how the multi-hazard early warning system (MHEWS) community support the decision-making process
  • What information products are needed to assist the planning of the response?

This session aims at bringing together MHEWS providers, disaster managers, and humanitarian actors to explore the role of disaster early warning in humanitarian decision-making.


Agenda

Session plan:

  • Introduction by Marzia Santini (JRC), Cyrille Honore (WMO) and Gantsetseg Gantulga (IFRC) (5 minutes each)
  • Setting the scene with 2 presentations from guest speakers Ana Maria Pereira (UNOCHA) and Nirivololona Raholijao, Head of the Madagascar Met Service (10 minutes each)
  • Exercise set up and organisation of groups (estimated 10-15 minutes)
  • Exercise conduction in groups, with organizers as facilitators (25 minutes)
  • Wrap up and conclusions (15 minutes)
