Session title: Can We Make Sustainability Truly Sustainable?
Organizer(s): Katherine Ely, Michela Balzino
3 Mar 26 10:00-11:30

SessionAbstract

In a humanitarian context where resources are increasingly constrained, sustainability should be approached not as an added cost but as a strategic opportunity to optimize operations. This session will demonstrate that sustainability can be truly sustainable — environmentally, operationally, and financially.

By applying circular economy principles and practical solutions—such as improving procurement strategies, solarizing facilities, shifting to lower-emission and cost-effective transport modes, optimizing fleets, and recovering value from waste—organizations can
reduce environmental impact while enhancing cost savings, ensuring business continuity in times of emergency, and aligning with donor requirements.
