Session title: Heating up - humanitarian preparedness and response to heatwaves
Organizer(s): ADAPT Initiative
4 Mar 26 11:00-12:30

SessionAbstract

Global temperatures are rising, and with them the threat of extreme heat. Periods of extreme heat (or heatwaves) can increase mortality rates by 20-30% - and they are increasing rapidly. Between 2000 and 2035, the number of heatwaves is expected to increase by 800%. The populations served by humanitarian operations are often at particular risk. Many humanitarian contexts are in 'hot spots', where the risk of heatwaves is increasing very rapidly. And the people affected often have limited access to water, healthcare and adequate shelter. BUT there are - often fairly simple and inexpensive - things that humanitarian actors can do to reduce the risk, and a number of agencies are already doing them. Join humanitarian practitioners from AIDMI, International Medical Corps, Oxfam and the Ministry of Health for South Sudan to find out more.
