Session title: Institutionalising Anticipatory Action: The Path Forward in Regional Intergovernmental Leadership
Organizer(s): FAO and partners, IGOs
4 Mar 26 10:00-11:00

SessionAbstract

While many governments have made considerable progress in advancing Anticipatory Action (AA), these efforts need to be yet systematized, full integrated into national risk management systems and scaled up. To this end, Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs) have embarked on a cooperation initiative that aims at supporting national leadership in anticipatory decision-making, ensuring technical support is aligned with country priorities and systems. Further, recognising the transboundary nature of many disasters, the IGOs’ cooperation also seeks to strengthen cross country exchange and collaboration. This initiative has been first presented at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in June 2025 and this session at HNPW 2026, led by IGOs with support from FAO and partners, will showcase the progress made in aligning regional efforts, standardizing AA frameworks, and supporting governments in embedding AA within national systems. This session will also highlight how IGOs are fostering peer-to-peer learning and developing collaborative models that reinforce government leadership and community engagement. Speakers from IGOs will share milestones achieved since GPDRR, sharing lessons learned and challenges faced on the path to institutionalization.
