Extreme heat has been increasingly recognized as a threat to the well-being of crisis-affected individuals. There have been significant efforts to conceptually frame how to manage the extreme heat hazard and measures to warn of and manage extreme heat events. However, these have largely not been specific to the challenges faced in providing humanitarian shelter and settlements assistance. The in-person/remote session will be structured around three segments. The first will provide a short overview of the work of the Extreme Heat WG in the context of the new Shelter, Land and Site Coordination Cluster. The second session provide an overview of current warning, preparedness and planning for extreme heat events in the humanitarian context. The third segment will focus on examples of operational response to extreme heat conditions based on case studies and research. Outcomes of the sessions are expected to include: (1) documentation of extreme heat warning, preparedness and planning approaches appropriate for humanitarian operations and (2) examples of real-time management of the extreme heat hazard in humanitarian operations. These results will be documented in a report. While the session is being sponsored by the Shelter, Land and Site Management Shelter Cluster Extreme Heat Working Group, participation from within humanitarian sphere (e.g., Health, WASH, Education, Early Recovery clusters) and developmental or commercial spheres will be encouraged. |
